This weekend’s line up of live music in Dayton is extra special as it features a highly anticipated reunion show with beloved local legends, Brainiac. They will be performing with other old-school Dayton bands, for a night that will be a blast from the past for many local music fans (including myself!)

Friday night features a fun mix of indie, rock, pop, garage, post-punk and space music from local bands Swimming with Sharks, Novagold, Mad Anthony, and Are They Above Us? at Blind Bob’s. Music 9pm. $5 at the door
Up north, there’s a sweet show at Oscar’s Bar in Vandalia with Jericho Thyme (9:30-12am) with special guest Sharon Lane (8-9pm). That will certainly be a lively evening of entertaining blues, rock, and jams! Well worth the short trip up 75 for this one. $5 cover.
Also north of town, country fans are in for a treat with Home Free “A Country Christmas Tour”at Hobart Arena in Troy. The 5-man band has become known for their show-stopping performances that mix their signature no-instrument, all-vocal music with their quick-witted humor. Show 8pm. VIP options available. Saturday December 16th
The most anticipated show of the weekend is Jeremy Frederick’s North of Nowhere South, an annual celebration to benefit the Izzy Frederick Education Fund. The Haunting Souls were scheduled to play a 30 year reunion this weekend at this benefit show. A family tragedy postponed the reunion, so 3RA1N1AC is now performing with special guests, SUNKEN GIRRAFFE (pre-brainiac cigarhead high-school punk band) and FLESHBATS (old school Dayton punk) at Yellow Cab Tavern. $10 at the door. Door at 8PM. Show at 9PM. 18+ Get there early!
Please note: If you will not be able to attend but would still like to give some toward’s Izzy’s education: Isabella Frederick Educational Fund, Wright Patt Credit Union. P.O. Box 286, Fairborn, Ohio 45324. In addition, there will be limited edition T-shirts and posters from the Brainiac Untitled Documentary show in Brooklyn that were just made for this impromptu “Part 2” show. This will help with the film’s editing process and a portion will also be given to Izzy’s college fund.
Another cool benefit show is happening down the street at Blind Bob’s at the Choices Benefit Show with Sidekick Complex, Enzo, Yuppie. $5 cover will benefit the CHOICES Foster Care and Independent Living program. A great cause, and great night of indie rock1
Cherry Lee & The Hot Rod Hounds are ready to make you dance with their old county rock-a-billy over at Trolley Stop. Always a fun time with this talented and very fun crew! Music starts at 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
It’s an Americana style night with The Roughly Feathered Band and Jake Dunn & the Blackbirds, who are touring this fall, and making a stop at Oregon Express. They are all new on my radar, so should be an interesting one to check out! 9pm. $5 cover. 21+
The music community certainly feels like family, and the jam world unites and celebrates at the Herdman Family Christmas Party Jam at Hannah’s, featuring excellent set of musicians: Chris Houser, Dino Dimitrouleas, Charlie Tipton, Jonny Dread, Tbone Themetronome, Sharon A. Lane and Tony Herdman. Now that’s a sweet line-up! Very cool! Music from 8pm – 1am. Free show! 21+
Heavy metal fans will want to check out the regional mix of super popular bands, including: Necrotic Disgorgement, Carrion Vael, Retreat Hell, and Forces of Nature at Oddbody’s Music Room. Doors and Show at 7pm $10 tickets.
And as always, thank you for supporting live music!
Your Dayton Music Insider,
Note to Readers: The information above is for December 2017. This is a listing of interesting shows in the Miami Valley region, but is by no means definitive. There are always lots of shows, and so much space and time to touch upon them all. If I don’t list a price, I’m not sure what it is. Typically cover charges for local shows are $5.
