Last weekend I had the pleasure of getting out of my typical scene and checked out some really cool new bands, thanks to encouragement from Kim Weiss at Music Connection Dayton. I’m so glad I did!
This week, I encourage all of you do the same. Always see punk rock? Check out a singer / songwriter! Always see jam bands? Check out some hard rock! Get out of your comfort zone and you may be pleasantly surprised!

Thursday October 5th
This week there is another Showcase Thursday for your enjoyment at Yellow Cab. The folks over at YC carry on the tradition to showcase local singer / songwriter regularly, as established at Canal St years ago. This installment features Brice Meriwether, Max B. Greene, Steve Zax, Meg Cavanaugh, and Golden Guy’s Next Last Stand. Music from 8:30-11pm. No cover.
One of my bootleg Friday fave things to do is go to Oregon Express for the weekly Medicine Wheel show, which features the very talented members of Subterranean. It’s always a lively night of rock’n’roll, so if you’re up for some late night fun, this is your spot! Music starts around 10pm. No cover. 21+
A new Thursday night tradition of oysters and jazz is happening up at Hannah’s on Ludlow (near the Arts Garage). The Next One Up hosts a jazz session from 8:30-11:30 to set the vibe. No cover.
Friday October 6th
Punk / hard rock fans, check out the line-up at Blind Bob’s Friday night: Vacation (high energy, distorted poppy-punk from Cincinnati), Big Eyes (punk-rock-pop from NYC), along with Dayton support from The Raging Nathans, Yardboss, and SKRT. 9pm. 21+ $8 cover.
Taylor Krupp, a singer, songwriter and guitarist based out of Nashville, is in town performing at Trolley Stop on Friday evening, supporting his debut album “Coming Up for Air.” He’s new on my radar, but I suspect if you like country or Americana tunes, this will be a great show to check out. 9:30pm. 21+
Speaking of Nashville, Brooks Daughtery is back in town this weekend, performing wtih Tony Herdman at Angie’s Firehouse Tavern. Always a good time with this crew! Music starts at 9pm and goes till midnight. Free show!
Missin’ the good ole days? Head over to see The Tracers return to the Oregon Express. I don’t often mention cover bands, but with acts like R.E.M., The Replacements, David Bowie, and The Cure on their song list, I’d say they will be a fun diversion for the evening. 9:30pm-1:30am. $5 cover. 21+
Another chance to go back to the good ole days includes a unique show Rusted Roots singer/songwriter Michael Glabicki with Dirk Miller (on at 9:30pm), and special guest Tyler Smilo (on at 8pm) at One Eyed Jacks. $12 at door. Doors open at 7:00pm.
Saturday October 7th
Saturday night brings the main event of the GemFest 2017 Summer Concert Series at Yellow Cab Tavern, featuring tons of great Dayton rock bands including: Jasper The Colossal, ThunderTaker, Death By Fetish, RIND, Stella’s Demise, Founding Fathers, and Sunset Junkies. This year’s proceeds will go to SICSA Pet Adoption Center. $5 at the door. Music 7pm-1:30am.
Looking for a super hard core show? Head over to RockStar Pro Arena to check out Ice Nine Kills, along with Lorna Shore, Phantoms, New Haven, Avanti, and The Ako Vendetta. This is going to be a very popular show so I recommend getting presales, and getting there early! Show 6pm – 11pm. Presales: $13. All ages.
A show that sounds great to me is the Salvadore Ross, Kercheif, Lackluster, and Big Lightning show at Blind Bob’s. I’m really into the experimental grooves from these acts, especially the headliner, Salvadore Ross. 9pm. 21+ $5 cover.
Jam band fans will be groovin’ to Zoo Trippin (Columbus), Vibe & Direct (Cleveland), and JoJo Stella at Oddbody’s Music Room on Saturday night. Fun times ahead! Doors 7pm. Show 8pm. $10 advance. $15 day of show. 18+
Jazz fans – don’t forget about the live jazz every single night of the week at Blue Note Bistro & Lounge in Miamisburg. It’s a lush setting, with swanky live music. A great place for dates, or meeting up with friends!
And as always, thank you for supporting live music!
