You can smell the excitement in the air! A 3-day weekend is finally here! Make the most of the extended weekend by enjoying the exciting and eclectic live music scene in Dayton.
This weekend’s line-up truly offers a diverse array of genres, from jazz to metal, so there is sure to be a show that’s perfect for you and yours. Keep reading to get all details!
Friday May 26th
If you’re looking for an early happy hour show, check out Scott Barker & Windsor Knotts at the Boston Stoker in Centerville on Far Hills Ave. These gentleman will be performing both solo and together. Windsor will even be celebrating Memorial Day by playing all songs about or popular during the Civil War. Interesting! Show 6:30-8:30pm
Certainly one of the most highly anticipated shows of the weekend is Paige Beller’s EP Release entitled “Paige Beller…and her friend Peter” at Blind Bob’s. She’s a true Dayton rock star, and we all are pumped to hear more from this prolific songwriter. This EP features Peter Mills and The Belairs. Special guests Kerchief, Frances & the Foundation, and NOVAGOLD are also performing at this rockin’ show. Don’t miss it! Show 9pm. $5 cover. 21+
I would highly recommend the Great Northern String Band at Tumbleweed for any fans of jam or bluegrass music. This ultra talented local tribute band performs a vibrant acoustic version of the Grateful Dead. You’ll be smile, smile, smiling all night long! Starts at 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
Another folky band is performing down the street at Trolley Stop. There you can catch Devil Doves, an original 4-piece from Columbus. Their upbeat tunes will have you boogieing in your boots! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
Jazz fans, check out Phonic Uproar and The Johnson Treatment at Oregon Express on Friday evening. Phonic Uproar was founded at the University Of Dayton and features six male vocalists. The Johnson Treatment is a jazz combo also consisting of current and alumni students from the University of Dayton. Nice! Their style ranges from the Big Band, funk, to modern. I love this concept! Check it out! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+
A show I’m interested in checking out is Outdated View, from Akron. They are a heavy blues rock band, that is new to me. Checked out their debut EP and sounds like a fun rock show to me! Local band The Willy Clark Band kicks off the night. Jimmie’s Ladder 11. Show at 9pm. $5 cover.
Out in Yellow Springs, check out alternative rock bands Speaking Suns, Steven King (Columbus), Smizmar (Cleveland), and M Ross Perkins at Peach’s Grill. Great line-up! And even better – it’s a FREE show! 9pm 21+
Saturday May 27th
Fun times are sure to be had at the Charlie Tipton Band of Heathens live at Oregon Express. Charlie a natural songwriter and entertainer, teamed up with Doug Goodnerand to put together this band of heathens. I’m intrigued to hear what they’ve come up with. If you’re out and about, be sure to stop by! $5 cover. 9pm 21+
A great rock show is happening over at Blind Bob’s with The Pullouts (Dayton), One Day Steady (Cincinnati), and 3 Piece Suit (Springfield). This fantastic mix of Ohio-based bands are influenced by a mix of rock from The Animals to Jackson Brown to Red Hot Chili Peppers. Sounds fun to me! Doors 9pm. Show 10pm. Free show! 21+
Jazz fans are again in for a treat with the Urban Jazz Coalition (Columbus) performing at Gilly’s Jazz. They are a hot new contemporary jazz group who are creating major buzz on the national festival circuit over the past few years. $10 admission. 8pm show.
Metal fans, national act Deicide is at Oddbodys Saturday evening. This is one a lot of folks have been excited for, so get your ticket early! $30 advance. $35 day of show. Doors 5pm. Show 5:30-11:30pm. 18+
Local metal, hard rock bands are also hosting A Badass Rock & Roll Show at W.O. Wright’s out by WSU. A Shade Of Red, Evil Eye Gypsy and R.I.N.D are ready to rock your socks off! 9pm show. $5 at the door. 21+
Feeling funky? Well you sure will be after seeing Freekbass and Krunk Town Boogie at One Eyed Jacks, also out by WSU. Fun times for sure! $8 at the door. +18 must have I.D.
Out in Yellow Springs, the HogJam preview show is set to be one of the “don’t miss” events of the weekend. Dawg Yawp, The Lovers, and Ramblin Mac Williams are all performing, showcasing some of the best talent to be seen at this year’s HogJam (a wonderful festival held in late August). Lots of great buzz about all these bands! Additionally, they are partnering with The Foodbank Dayton. Canned goods are accepted as donation, so please support them! FREE show. 8pm at Peach’s Grill.
Also in Yellow Springs, new local band Rite of Venus returns to the Spirited Goat. This duo performs roots rock for your soul! And it’s a free show (however tips are always happily accepted!) All ages are welcome. Show 8-11pm.
North of town at Oscar’s in Vandalia is another chance to catch the aforementioned Great Northern String Band. Show 9:30pm.
Sunday May 28th
No Memorial Day would be complete without a stop at the Heritage Day Festival at Carillon Historical Park, with a featured performance by the Dayton Philharmonic from 7-8:30pm. There are demonstrations and activities all day long starting at 11am. See full schedule here. Tickets: Ages 18-59: $8 / Ages 60+: $7 / Ages 3-17: $5 / Under 3: Free

Over at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 on Sunday from 5-8pm you can enjoy a continuation of their Singer Songwriter Series on their Acoustic Patio. Dan Raridan, Jacob Longhorne, and Kyla Mainous are featured this week. Call (937) 424-1784 if you would like to reserve a table.
Tuesday May 30th
As a fan of Maxwell‘s 1996 “Urban Hang Suite” album, I cannot neglect to mention that Maxwell is performing Tuesday evening at Fraze Pavilion. This is a must see for R&B and soul fans! Tickets start at $46, and are subject to a $5 increase day of show.
