Beloved restaurant forced to close after storm damage

This weekend, make live music your winter warmup

As the winter chill sits in, get yourself warmed up with some live music. Nothing like dancing and smiling with friends to forget about how cold it’s getting!

The music scene is also getting in quite the holiday spirit this weekend, with lots of benefit shows, fun collaborations, and special galas that are sure to get you festive too.

Keep reading to find out all the fun that’s happening!

Friday December 9th

15285061_10207434990062539_2500397847176765044_n.jpgJam band fans will be stoked to see ekoostik hookah and Subterranean at Oddbody’s Music Room. The former is celebrating their 25th anniversary, performing over 2500 shows, which is an incredible achievement for any band! Subterranean is one of my area favorite up-and-coming rock groups. Guaranteed to be a great show! Doors 8pm. Show 8:30pm. Tickets are $15 at the door. 18+

Down in the Oregon District, I’d recommend checking out Gary “Guitar” Williams & Friends and Nasty Bingo over at Oregon Express. The musical style is referred to as “Folkadelic” – mixing folk, rock, blues, pop, country, and gospel to create a very unique and accessible sound. Such a great group of musicians on stage! Don’t miss it! Show starts at 9:30pm, but get there early for a good seat! $5 cover. 21+

Who else is a Star Wars fan out there? If you are, make sure you get to Dublin Pub for the Star Wars: Rogue One Movie Release Party with Il Troubadore and the Wookiee Cellist. $5 cover. Music from 7:00pm to 1am. Costumes are encouraged!

14717204_10157706861005268_3577892037875788416_n.jpgIf you’re looking for more of a hard rock / punk kind of night, definitely head over to Blind Bob’s for the Dirtbag Christmas show, featuring Red Hot Rebellion, The Jasons, Transylvania Hellhounds, and Roxy Mae. Be prepared for some face melting! 10pm show. $5 cover.

Blues fans, enjoy the Doug Hart Band over at Trolley Stop this evening. Maybe it’s just me, but the Blues sure does warm me up on a cold winter evening! 9:30pm. $5 cover. 21+

Up north at Oscar’s Bar in Vandalia, Magnolia Supernova and Cosmic Coda will be reuniting once again for an awesome night of music. This is a great show for rock and jam band fans, or anyone who just loves good live music. These bands are new to the scene, so be sure to show them some love! Show starts at 9:00pm. $5 cover. 18+

Saturday December 10th

One of the most unique events of the year happens this evening: The Surrealist Ball, which is a fundraiser for Strong, which provides support to children and teens who have been victimized and abused. This great cause is combined with an ultra cool party, which features live music from Echo Mecca, Sally Louise (aka Thunder Thighs) and  DJ Yes Body. There will also be dancing, food, and “roaming bizarre entertainment” which sounds super intriguing! Tickets are $40 pre-sale and $50 day of show.Formal surrealist headgear is required! Dec10_FunkCenterHolidayGala.jpgDowntown, the Alan Smithee Project performs at Oregon Express this evening, starting at 9pm. OE is also one of the stops on the Santa Pub Crawl happening in the Oregon District from 5-11pm. It’s a fun way to support Toys for Tots, and get your live music in too! Cover charge is $5 at OE. $10 cash or toy donation to participate in the Santa Pub Crawl. More info on the pub crawl here.

A super cool rock show is happening down at Jimmie’s Ladder 11 with Manray, Yardboss, Mary Lynn, and Amber Gregory. Great music, great people. Can’t go wrong with this one! $5 cover. 9pm 18+

For the club kids out there, don’t forget this Saturday is the Pearl Reunion at Cloverdale. No necessarily “live music” but music from back in the day, plus modern music, will be played. This is just a fun throw back dance event! Starts at 9pm.

Hard rock fans will be lovin’ the show at Oddbody’s Music Room with Grinder (a tribute to Judas Priest), Lift the Medium, and ThunderTaker. Show 8pm. $5 admission. 18+

If you’re feeling funky and feeling the holiday spirit, head over to the 2nd Annual Holiday Gala at Gilly’s Jazz, presented by The Funk Music Hall of Fame. Music provided by Dell Cook & the Heavy Stone Band and DJ Oscar. $20 Admission. 8pm – 12am.

fingertipslips-300x298Another great show for funk fans is down in Miamisburg at the beautiful Blue Note Bistro & Lounge. Fingertips & Lips, a product of Bootsy Collins “Funk Unity” Band based out of Cincinnati, Ohio is the featured performer for the evening. The threesome has been touring with Bootsy since 2008 and have gained worldwide recognition, performing a mix of Pop/R&B, light rock and Jazz that is sure to please any crowd! Chuck Evans kicks off the evening early at 5pm. Fingertips & Lips get started at 8:30pm.

Oscar’s has been really having some great acts lately, and this Sat is no exception. They cleverly warn: You better watch out, you better not cry, be ready to dance, I’m tellin’ you why – Todd the Fox is comin’ to town! Love it! Plus special guest elf Branden Stivers will be spreading cheer! Music from 9pm – 12am. $5 cover.

Operation: Giving Back Christmas to help children have a Christmas at the Old Crow Bar in Middletown. Music starts early, around 5:45pm with live performances by Four Start Revival, Dear Agony, New Age Sinner, Saving Escape, Secret Circle Society, Temper, Down Strange Charm, Shotgun Surprise, along with an acoustic performance by MC Casey. There will be raffles, food, and even adult face painting by Skull Dollz. 18-20 years old $8 cover. 21+ $5 cover.

Sunday December 11th

The 4th annual Hip Hop 4 Hunger event is back at Blind Bob’s, featuring Tino, Sam Rothstein, Dane, MerQ, and Bobby Marley. $5 donations at the door benefit Good Neighbor House. 9pm.

Sunday night is also the evening for Wise Word‘s “Expectation” LP release party at Jimmie’s Ladder 11. Carriers, Eddie Island, and Cat Street, are also on the bill, helping celebrate this achievement. Show at 8pm. $5 (or more) donations at the door go towards Haiti relief.
