22292_968674933176605_2298568510663473725_nThis weekend Nightbeast takes over Dayton! Couldn’t be a more appropriate time. In the past week, they killed it at Sideshow X and released a new music video. They are also perfect for the “we’re almost out of school!!!” feeling that so many high school and college students are experiencing. This is the type of party band you want to rock out to with your friends, especially on the brink of summertime! They are silly and awesome, and you can’t help but smile at their on stage antics. If you are in the mood to truly have fun, this is your ticket!

You can catch them Friday night (May 15) performing at Little York Tavern in Troy, with another of my personal Dayton faves Good English and Cincinnati’s Violent Kind. On Saturday, May 16, they are playing Blind Bob’s with Cincinnati’s Automagik and Dayton’s Back Stabbath. (Love the name!) They claim to be the closest you’re going to get Black Sabbath, so metal fans, get there!

Can’t make the shows? Check out Nightbeast’s music videos here. They are hilarious, well-executed and feature really catchy songs!

For those of you who miss Cityfolk, there are two opportunities this summer to get a taste of that beloved local music festival. Thursday at Lily’s Bistro you will find artists playing as part of the Cityfolk Preview Party. The event is running from 5-10 p.m., with happy hour specials all evening. Musicians will be performing, including the lovely duo I mentioned last week, The Blackbirds. All musicians performing are also part of the larger event, The Cityfolk Celebration, which is happening June 27th. Mark your calendars for that event as well!

Punk fans unite! The 2nd annual Dayton Music Pest, a two-day punk extravaganza, is this weekend at Canal Public House. Doors open early at 4 p.m. and will be heavy all night long! Tickets for Friday are $12 at the door.

Nasty Bingo is playing the food truck rally at the Yellow Cab Tavern from 7-9 p.m., although to be clear, the rally starts at 5 and runs till 10 p.m. I’d recommend coming during the musical set. They are great for my friends who are fans of acoustic, down home music. They get my foot tappin’!

Rockabilly and even country fans will get a kick out of Cherry Lee and the Hot Rod Hounds at Blind Bob’s. Only a $5 cover, too. If Nasty Bingo’s set got you going, then walk over to Bob’s and continue on with your evening!

If you’re looking for something a little different, try out the Ilumen-Naughty event at Therapy CafeThat is always a wild evening which includes live music, burlesque, performance art, magic and more! Show starts at 9:30 p.m. and will cost you $7 at the door.

Kids in tow? Head over to World A’Fair at the Dayton Convention Center. It’s $5 pre-sale at Krogers, or $10 at the door. There is traditional music, dance, food and beverages from over 30 countries! Take a tour of the world without leaving the city! Remember this event goes on through Sunday! Don’t miss the French cancan dancers!

Saturday, May 16
Dayton Music Pest at Canal Public House continues today, with no less than 16 bands taking the stage. Doors open at noon, and tickets are $15. Quite a steal for the amount of bands playing this event!

For my jam band friends – a treat! A FREE show at Oddbody’s Music Room, featuring two full sets of Boogie Matrix Mechanism. This is part of their “The Last Hurrah” tour, as the band members are going their separate ways after a decade of playing out locally. A special meet and greet will take place from 8-9 p.m., followed by a yet-to-be-named special guest, and then Boogie Matrix takes the Oddbody’s stage for the last time. Let’s support these guys who have shown us so much love over the years!

More goodbyes… The Dayton music community was deeply saddened by the passing of Karl Benge last week. A fundraiser is being held at Oregon Express, with a variety of local favorites performing and paying tribute.  Music starts at 9 p.m. and continues all night. If you can’t make the fundraiser but want to contribute to the funeral costs, please visit the Go Fund Me page here.

On the other end of the Oregon District, you will find The Repeating Arms performing at Dublin PubThey are a little bit folk, little bit bluegrass, and all around delightful. Check it out! Music starts at 9 p.m.

Sunday, May 17
Sunday will be a Funday at Jimmie’s Ladder 11. Check out Paige Beller with Harold Hensley and Brandon Hawk, playing on the patio at 3pm! Good times!

Classical fans – don’t miss the Concert Master’s Choice performance with Jessica Hung, the Concert Master for the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. Performance starts at 3pm and is being held at the Dayton Art Institute. Jessica is not only a world class violinist, she’s a world class person. Please support this lovely afternoon event!

Wednesday, May 20
Since my blog comes out on Thursdays, so mid-week shows tend to get skipped over. Don’t miss American Aquarium at Oddbody’s, supported by local acts Far From Eden and Mack McKenzie. They are a very popular rootsy rock band from Raleigh and will be a hit for both rock and country fans. Check out their music and then get to this show! Advance tickets are only $6! Dos $10.

BONUS: Looking for a local Guitar Hero! The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is looking for the real Dayton Guitar Hero, with a chance to win some pretty cool prizes! Get all the details here.

As always, thank you for supporting the live music scene in Dayton. Cheers!
