One of the hallmarks of spring is Record Store Day! Established in 2007, RSD was started by independent music stores across the world to celebrate the unique culture of record stores, and the importance of them in our community. Please support one of the participating stores in Dayton this Saturday, April 18th: Omega Music in the Oregon District, Disc Exchange in Kettering, Classic Country Connection in Xenia and Toxic Beauty Records in Yellow Springs. Personal shout out to Omega Music for the free Lower Dens album this week! Follow them on Instagram for future contests: @omegamusicdayton. There will be discounts and prizes on Saturday so make sure you get there!

Joy Ike’s “All or Nothing” album cover

My friends in Springfield often feel left out of the fun, but that is not the case today! Wittenberg University is hosting Joy Ike at 8 p.m. Self described as “soulfolk,” her music is reminiscent of Norah Jones and Fiona Apple. Click the link on her name and take a listen. Beautiful voice! Don’t miss out on a great show.

Friday

Quite the eclectic mix happening this evening! Downtown at Oregon Express you will find local funk-rock band Gem City getting the stage warmed up for Baoku. Cincinnati’s Baoku performs world/Afrobeat music and is comprised of members from different musical and cultural backgrounds. If you love percussion and horns and a strong dance vibe, you’ll be right at home here. Only a $5 cover. Broaden your horizons and check out something new!

unnamed-1Therapy Cafe has started an event every 3rd Friday called “Ilumen Naughty — a variety show that features live music, sideshow acts, comedy, magic, burlesque and more! The bands playing are Hexadiode, Skeleton Hands and Dark Machine Nation. Fans of cold wave and 70s/80s synth will enjoy. DJ’s will take over for the late night sets. Cover is only $5 for all this entertainment! This is an 18+ event, starting at 9 p.m.

For my hippie friends who are still licking their wounds about not getting Fare Thee Well tickets, come down to Jimmie’s Ladder 11 to hear Arrows of Neon jam the music of the Grateful Dead. These guys embody the spirit and music in a way that will make you smile, smile, smile. Great patio, great people. This is a guaranteed fun time!

Out of the Dayton area? Got you covered. Megan Wormz Bihn, a “homespun rootsy” musician who sounds like a mix of Jewel and John Prine, is playing at Taffy’s in Eaton. Sounds like an easy-going night that the laid back folks in Preble County will enjoy. Jam band fans in Middletown will be delighted by the line up at Old Crow Bar in Middletown featuring The Rumpke Mountain Boys, Boogie Matrix Mechanism, The Jim DeCapua Band and Shinebox. Wow! That’s worth the drive from Dayton. These guys will be pickin’ and jammin’ till closing time! Doors at 7 p.m., $10 cover at door.

Saturday

Well I know the first thing you all will be doing is going to a record store for Record Store Day! YES — there will be live music, too. Omega Music in the Oregon District is planning on a few bands playing throughout the day starting at 1 p.m. with the New Regrets, followed by Forage, Grenades!?, Dayton Fresh Beat Project and lastly, at 6 p.m., R Ring, Buffalo Killers & Ampline.

Anxious to get the summer started? Head over to the 31st Annual BarnJam at the Adventures of the Great Miami. BarnJam is described as a bi-annual, rain or shine musical experience that is focused around music, art and the community. Newly located on the Great Miami River just outside Dayton, Ohio, BarnJam continues the tradition of promoting our music scene by showcasing local and regional musical talent and aims to raise money for local arts-based charitable organizations. Music starts at noon with a great lineup featuring Gin Soaked Angels, Gem City and many more! Click the Barn Jam link above for full line up and ticket details!

Saturday night downtown is chock full of straight up rock’n’roll! If you are a hard rock fan, hipster or just wondering where all the cool kids will be… I’d say either at Yellow Cab, Blind Bob’s and Oregon Express. I’m personally looking forward to the YC show, dubbed the “Official Grand Opening of Wicked ‘Wich of Dayton” (no this has nothing to do with Wicked playing at Schuster — it’s a food truck!). Cannot wait to see The Nightbeast, along with Rough Customers, Jasper the Colossal and Skurt. Legbone will be at Bob’s for the hardcore/punk fans. Fans of indie and garage music will be rocking out to DAAP Girls and The Professors as part of the Record Store Day wrap up. Yes, rock’n’roll lives in Dayton — and we are proving it Saturday night!

If you’re into country music and wondering where you fit into all this — easy! Chris Knight is playing Oddbody’s, along with Mark Cantwil. $15 Advance, $20 DoS.

Sunday

Music for the weekend doesn’t end on Saturday. A great all-female acoustic group, Berachah Valley, will be performing at 3rd on Third, Dayton’s eclectic outdoor Sunday market. If that gets your day rolling, then wrap up by checking out Scott Lee and the Whiskey River Boys at Blind Bob’s.

Lastly, there will be a Sunday night dance party with bass fusion artist Yheti at Yellow Cab, as a benefit for Sideshow X. If it’s not already on your calendar – get it marked now! Sideshow X returns May 8th & 9th. You don’t want to miss it!

As always, thank you for supporting the live music scene in Dayton. Cheers!

Libby Ballengee
